Mariano Lake Chapter's Winter Youth Employment
Winter Youth Employment Project: Quilt-Making Instructions
As part of the Winter Youth Employment Project, participants will create a quilt by choosing one of the following options:
Option A: Red No-Sew Fleece Blanket
This project involves creating a simple and cozy no-sew fleece blanket using tied edges.
Supplies:
- 2 pieces of fleece fabric in coordinating colors (2 yards each for a teen/adult blanket).
- A ruler.
- Sharp scissors or a rotary cutter.
Instructions:
- Lay both fleece fabrics flat on the floor, with the right sides facing outward. Smooth out any wrinkles and align the edges.
- Trim the edges to ensure both layers are the same size.
- Cut a 5×5-inch square from each corner of the fabric. Then, make 1-inch-wide cuts around all edges, 5 inches deep into the fabric.
- Tie each strip into a balloon knot, wrapping each strip around your finger before securing the knot.
- Repeat this process around the blanket. Use yarn to ensure the two layers are securely tied together.
Option B: Patchwork No-Sew Blanket
This option is a more intricate project, resulting in a colorful patchwork quilt of tied fleece squares.
Supplies:
- 2 pieces of fleece fabric in coordinating colors (2 yards each for a teen/adult blanket).
- A ruler.
- Sharp scissors or a rotary cutter.
Instructions:
- Plan the Layout: Cut all fabric into 10×10-inch squares. Add fringes around all edges of each square.
- Cut the Squares and Fringes: Make the fringes 1 inch wide and 3 inches long. Arrange 30 squares (5 rows of 6) in your desired pattern on a flat surface.
- Tie the Squares Together: Place two squares back-to-back with the wrong sides facing each other. Tie the matching fringes of adjacent squares using double knots. Repeat this for all squares in a row.
- Assemble Rows: After tying all squares in a row, align adjacent rows. Tie the fringes together, ensuring tight and secure knots.
- Finish the Blanket: Check all knots to make sure they are secure. Trim any excess yarn for a clean, polished look.
Both options are beginner-friendly and suitable for participants with no prior sewing experience. Choose your preferred style and create a beautiful blanket to keep or share!
